Yemeni Army Withdraws From Zanjibar, “Leaving Weapons” Al Qaeda Says
Units of the Yemeni army withdrew from the center of the city of Zanzibar, the provincial capital of Abyan, after they had seized large areas during the past few weeks, which have enabled the armed groups claiming affiliation to al-Qaeda to take control over the city completely.
Sources in the units fighting in Zanjibar mentioned to Aden Online that the units locating in Bajidar neighborhood, the building of the Central Security, the stadium of Hassan Sports club and the Martyrs’ Square in the city, retreated towards the 25th Mechanized Brigade.
The sources indicated that the withdrawal came in response to orders by senior military leaders, issued to the field commanders to withdraw immediately, pointing out that three Yemeni soldiers were wounded by bullets of the armed groups during the withdrawal process.
Sides in the armed groups confirmed the news talking about the withdrawal, while sources in the armed groups said to adenalghad.net (Arabic) that the Yemeni military left huge quantity of weapons, stored by the army at a school in Bajidar neighborhood in the last few weeks.
The withdrawal comes after just one day of reports by Yemeni official media, talking about promises to achieve a near victory against the armed groups by the commander of the 25th Mechanized Media, Mohammed al-Somali
